Amid deadlocked US-Iran negotiations, the US Treasury Department has announced it’s imposing sanctions on 35 Iranian entities and individuals playing a role in Iran’s “shadow banking” networks.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said illicit funds – amounting to tens of billions of dollars funnelled by the designated entities and individuals – supported Iran’s “terrorist operations”.
Any firms making “toll payments” to Iran for passage through the blocked Strait of Hormuz face “significant sanctions”, its Office of Foreign Assets Control said.
