Sanders continues his speech, warning that if AI were to surpass human intelligence, as experts predict, it would bring “potentially catastrophic consequences”. He says he will introduce a bill next week to “permanently ban the development of artificial super intelligence”. “Further, this legislation will put an immediate pause on advanced AI development until we have clear safety rules in place developed by the most knowledgeable scientists in our country,” Sanders says. He then calls on President Trump to negotiate a treaty on AI safety with China's President Xi Jinping during their meeting in Washington next week “to establish a pause on advanced AI development and a ban on superintelligence”. “A super intelligent AI that escapes human control will not simply be an American problem. It will not be a Chinese problem," he says. "It will be humanity's problem.”
