The quakes, with magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, hit a minute apart on Wednesday night, and the second was the strongest to hit Venezuela since 1900 – here’s what else we know.

We’re seeing images showing military personnel guarding aid on a large lorry, presumably to help people affected by the earthquakes.

This comes after criticism that the government has not responded in time to the disaster.

The images show supplies on a lorry in La Guaira, one of the worst-impacted areas. Our colleague Vanessa Silva, who is there, reported earlier that she has yet to see international rescue teams deployed in the state.

As well as the rising death toll – now at 920 people – 383 buildings have been damaged, including 13 hospitals and 25 shopping centres, lawmaker Jorge Rodríguez says on Venezuelan television.

At least 1,000 other infrastructure sites have sustained damage, he adds.

He also says 243 people have been rescued from La Guaira, one of the areas worst affected by the earthquakes.

The Venezuelan defence minister has described anti-government protests which erupted after the disputed election result was announced as « a coup ».

People took to the streets across cities and towns in Venezuela on Monday in protest after the government-dominated electoral authority had declared President Nicolás Maduro the winner of the election.

Two leading NGOs in Venezuela have said that there have been several deaths and dozens of people injured.

As people gathered for fresh protest rallies, Gen Vladimir Padrino read out a statement saying that President Nicolás Maduro had the « absolute loyalty and unconditional support » of the armed forces, which would « defeat the coup ».

Venezuela’s attorney general, who is a close ally of Mr Maduro, said a member of the military had been killed in the anti-government protests.

Attorney General Tarek William Saab added that 749 people had been arrested.

He told journalists that most would be charged with « resisting authority and, in the most serious cases, terrorism ».

The opposition Voluntad Popular (Popular Will) party said among those who have been detained was their national political co-ordinator, Freddy Superlano.

The party warned that the government was stepping up its repression of activists who have been demanding the publication of results from polling stations, which the opposition say prove that their candidate won.

Protest erupted after the head of the National Electoral Council (CNE) – who is a member of Mr Maduro’s party and used to work as his legal adviser – declared the president re-elected for a third consecutive term.

The CNE had earlier announced that Mr Maduro had won with 51% of the votes, ahead of Edmundo González with 44%.

However, the electoral authority has so far failed to publish detailed voting tallies, which the opposition says show that the result the CNE announced was fraudulent.

The regional body for the Americas, the Organization of American States (OAS), has accused Venezuela’s government of completely distorting the results.

The opposition coalition backing Mr González said they had been able to review 73.2% of the voting tallies and maintained that they confirmed that Mr González was the winner by a wide margin.

« We have the records showing our categorical and mathematically irreversible victory, » Mr González said.

Opposition parties had united behind Mr González in an attempt to unseat President Maduro after 11 years in power, amid widespread discontent.

Almost 7.8m people have fled the economic and political crisis which has rocked the country under the Maduro Administration.

On Monday, crowds of people chanted “freedom, freedom” and called for the government to fall.

In some areas, posters of President Maduro were ripped down and burned while tyres, cars and rubbish were also set alight.

Miguel Sarzalejo, 64, told the BBC that “we want a better future for the youth because if not they will leave the country ».

« We have a rich country and he is destroying everything, » he added referring to President Maduro.

The opposition has urged its supporters to gather peacefully in squares across the country on Tuesday while the government has also called on its backers to rally.

The spokesman for the United Nations Secretary-General, Stephan Dujarric, said Venezuelans must be allowed to exercise their right to peaceful protest.

« It’s important that all political leaders and their supporters reject all forms of violence, threats of violence or incitement to violence. It is also, as it is in every country, primordial that the authorities respect the right of people to demonstrate peacefully and that they should protect that right and not hinder it. »

Avec l’arrivée massive de Vénézuéliens fuyant la situation humanitaire désastreuse dans leur pays, le Chili fait face à une crise migratoire inédite, sur fond de xénophobie.

« Ça suffit. Plus d’immigrés délinquants. Fermeture des frontières. » Rassemblées derrière une longue banderole noire, plusieurs milliers de personnes ont manifesté dimanche 30 janvier à Iquique, dans le nord du Chili. Cette ville côtière est devenue, depuis 2020, un point de transit pour les migrants vénézuéliens traversant à pied, de façon irrégulière, la frontière qui sépare le Chili de la Bolivie. Faute de structures d’accueil, ils campent sur la plage ou dans la rue, dans des conditions de grande précarité, au terme d’un parcours migratoire éreintant.

En marge du rassemblement, des manifestants s’en sont pris à un abri de migrants – absents lors de l’incident – au rythme de cris xénophobes, selon BBC Mundo. Des images de la télévision chilienne T13 ont montré des policiers faisant barrage afin de protéger un migrant assis sur la plage. Un Vénézuélien a été frappé par des manifestants.

Lundi 31 janvier, encore, la ville a été marquée par des manifestations : des camionneurs et des chauffeurs de taxi ont bloqué les accès routiers afin de protester contre la délinquance et l’immigration. Au mois de septembre 2021, déjà, des manifestations émaillées de violences et d’insultes racistes avaient choqué l’opinion.

Policiers agressés par des migrants

Ce nouveau rassemblement fait suite à l’agression de policiers d’Iquique par des migrants vénézuéliens, mardi 25 janvier. Symptôme du climat électrique entourant la crise migratoire, ce qui aurait pu n’être qu’un fait divers local a très rapidement été relayé, poussant le président élu, Gabriel Boric (gauche), à s’exprimer dès le lendemain de l’agression : « C’est inacceptable », a-t-il affirmé, assurant vouloir « éradiquer la délinquance et le narco [trafic] des rues ». Le gouvernement sortant de Sebastian Piñera (droite) a annoncé l’expulsion des migrants accusés de l’agression.

La coalition qui soutient le président Maduro, baptisée Grand pôle patriotique, a obtenu 67,7% des 5,2 millions de suffrages exprimés, a annoncé dans la nuit la présidente du Conseil national électoral. La fraction de l’opposition qui a participé au scrutin a obtenu 18% des voix, a-t-elle précisé.

« L’heure est venue. Nous avons su être patients de l’attendre pour enfin nous débarrasser de cette désastreuse Assemblée nationale (…) qui a apporté le fléau des sanctions (américaines), de la cruauté, de la douleur, de la souffrance », avait déclaré Nicolas Maduro après avoir voté dimanche.

Appel à rester à la maison

Quelque 14’000 candidats désignés par 107 partis étaient en lice pour s’emparer des 277 sièges soumis au suffrage de 20,7 millions de votants, auxquels l’opposition a demandé de rester à la maison. « Ce sera le meilleur moyen de rejeter la fraude » que représente cette élection, avait tweeté l’opposant Juan Guaido.

Cette élection, que ne reconnaîtra pas une majeure partie de la communauté internationale soutenant Juan Guaido, autoproclamé président par intérim et reconnu par plus de cinquante pays, Etats-Unis en tête (lire encadré), s’est déroulée dans un pays qui traverse une profonde crise politique et économique.

Un pays économiquement à terre

Etouffé par une inflation galopante (+4000% sur un an), paralysé dans d’interminables files d’attente pour faire le plein d’essence, fatigué du manque d’approvisionnement en eau et en gaz, et excédé par les brutales coupures de courant, le Venezuela est aux abois.

Les sanctions américaines, qui suscitent 71% de rejet dans la population selon l’institut de sondage Datanalisis, ont été au centre de la campagne du camp Maduro. Juan Guaido appelle pourtant à les « amplifier » lors d’une consultation populaire qu’il tiendra la semaine prochaine, sur laquelle il compte s’appuyer pour proroger son mandat au-delà de sa date d’expiration, le 5 janvier.

En choisissant une nouvelle fois de boycotter un scrutin qu’il estime sans garantie après la présidentielle de 2018 ou le vote sur une Assemblée constituante en 2017, Juan Guaido joue son va-tout avec cette consultation aux effets incertains.
