"I was able to convey the people's message and voice."

Not long before her killing by Israeli occupation forces, Al Jazeera correspondent Shireen Abu Akleh spoke about her career and what it meant to her to report on the occupation. pic.twitter.com/mUTmXJA9cA
— Al Jazeera English (@AJEnglish) May 11, 2022

"Ms Abu Akleh is a household name in the Arab world. Faraway but omnipresent in countless homes from Rabat to Riyadh… the victim of Israeli occupation, regardless of who or which soldier pulled the trigger."

— writes @marwanbishara for #AJOpinion ⤵️ https://t.co/q0KjaPY81v
— Al Jazeera English (@AJEnglish) May 11, 2022

“It’s extremely rare that Israeli soldiers… are ever held accountable for their actions.”

Israeli occupation forces have killed veteran Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh in the occupied West Bank. She was shot while covering Israeli raids on the Jenin refugee camp ⤵️ pic.twitter.com/u2Tp2aKPTv
— Al Jazeera English (@AJEnglish) May 11, 2022

Zhang Zhan, a 37-year-old former lawyer, has been held in detention since she was arrested in May.

She is accused of « picking quarrels and provoking trouble » – a charge often used against activists in China.

Ms Zhang is not the first citizen journalist who has run into trouble for reporting on the then virus-hit Wuhan.

At least three disappeared in February. One, Li Zehua, reappeared in April saying he had been « quarantining ».

It later emerged the second, Chen Qiushi, had been placed under government supervision, while the whereabouts of the third journalist, Fang Bin, is still unknown.

Chinese authorities are known to clamp down on activists who speak out.

Forced feedings

According to an indictment sheet which has now emerged, Ms Zhang made her way to Wuhan in February, where she reported on numerous stories. According to NGO the Network of Chinese Human Rights Defenders (CHRD) says her reports included the detention of other independent journalists and the harassment of families of victims who were seeking accountability.

But on 14 May she went missing from Wuhan, says CHRD. A day later, it was revealed she had been detained by police in Shanghai, more than 400 miles (640km) away.

On 19 June, she was formally arrested in Shanghai. Almost three months later, on 9 September, her lawyer was a granted a meeting with her.

You may also be interested in…

The CHRD says Ms Zhang had gone on a hunger strike to protest against her arrest. On 18 September, her lawyer received a phone call that she had been indicted. She was formally charged last Friday.

The indictment sheet, which emerged on Monday, alleges she sent « false information through text, video and other media through [platforms like] WeChat, Twitter and YouTube ». She was also accused of accepting interviews with foreign media outlets and « maliciously spreading » information about the virus in Wuhan.

A sentence of four to five years was recommended.

This is not the first time Ms Zhan has run into trouble with authorities. According to CHRD, she was summoned by police in Shanghai in September 2019 and detained for voicing support for activists in Hong Kong.

She was reportedly forced to undergo psychiatric examination while in detention.

Drareni, 40, an editor at the Casbah Tribune news site and correspondent for French-language channel TV5 Monde, had been sentenced to three years in jail in August for his coverage of Algeria’s anti-government protests.

The journalist was arrested on March 29 on charges of “inciting an unarmed gathering” and “endangering national unity” after covering demonstrations by the “Hirak” protest movement.

Weekly protests rocked Algeria for more than a year and only came to a halt in March due to the novel coronavirus crisis.

The Algerian judiciary has stepped up prosecutions and convictions of journalists, activists, political opponents and bloggers in recent months.

Some journalists have been accused of sowing discord, threatening national interests and being on the payroll of “foreign parties” with several in prison and trials under way.

Media watchdog Reporters Without Borders (RSF), which had called for Drareni’s release, condemned Tuesday’s verdict.

« We are outraged by the blind stubbornness of the Algerian judges who have just condemned (Drareni) to 2 years in prison, » RSF secretary-general Christophe Deloire tweeted after the verdict was announced.

« Khaled’s detention proves the regime locks itself into a logic of absurd, unfair and violent repression. »

Drareni was tried along with Samir Benlarbi and Slimane Hamitouche, two figures of the protest movement known as « Hirak ».

Facing the same charges, Benlarbi and Hamitouche were sentenced to four months in prison and released on time served.
