Navi Pillay, 85 ans, « a joué un rôle déterminant pour garantir que les crimes de guerre, les crimes contre l’humanité et le génocide fassent l’objet de poursuites judiciaires », salue le comité du Nobel.

La lauréate du prix Nobel est une personne « qui, avec un courage et une intégrité exceptionnels, a ouvert la voie à un ordre juridique mondial plus complet ». Il s’agit de la première Sud-Africaine à recevoir ce prix depuis Nelson Mandela en 1993.

Navi Pillay a été haute commissaire de l’ONU aux droits de l’homme de 2008 à 2014. Auparavant, elle avait été juge à la Cour pénale internationale (CPI) et avait présidé le Tribunal pénal international pour le Rwanda (TPIR).

« Génocide » à Gaza

Et plus récemment, elle avait également dirigé la Commission d’enquête internationale indépendante sur Israël et les territoires palestiniens. Avec ses deux collègues, elle avait affirmé l’année dernière dans un rapport que l’Etat hébreu avait perpétré un génocide dans la bande de Gaza, ce qui lui avait attiré une importante réprobation des autorités de ce pays.

Elle déplore d’avoir été qualifiée d' »antisémite » depuis et dénonce les appels sur les réseaux sociaux de ceux qui réclament que les Etats-Unis la sanctionnent, comme Washington l’a fait pour une rapporteure de l’ONU, des juges de la CPI et des ONG palestiniennes.

Aujourd’hui, Navi Pillay est juge à la Cour internationale de justice dans l’affaire où la Birmanie est accusée de génocide.

L’ONU « fière » et « heureuse »

L’ONU se réjouit de l’annonce du comité du Nobel. « C’est un témoignage du besoin et des valeurs des droits humains dans le monde plus que jamais », a dit vendredi à Genève une porte-parole du Haut-Commissariat.

« Nous espérons que cela encouragera et continuera à inspirer d’autres à parler pour la protection et la défense des droits humains de tous les individus dans le monde », a-t-elle insisté. « Nous sommes tous très fiers et heureux », a dit la directrice de l’information de l’ONU à Genève Alessandra Vellucci.

Dans un monde déchiré par les conflits et les crises, 287 individus et organisations ont été proposés pour la prestigieuse récompense cette année.

War has devastated Gaza’s economy, education, healthcare, infrastructure and public services, transforming how Palestinians live, work, learn and survive.

Three years after Israel launched its genocidal war on Gaza following the Hamas-led October 7, 2023 attack on Israel, the Palestinian enclave has been transformed beyond recognition.

Israel’s sustained aerial and ground assault has devastated vast parts of the Gaza Strip, destroying homes and neighbourhoods and severely damaging its infrastructure and essential services.

The war has shattered the lives of a population of around two million people. Repeated displacement and evacuation orders have uprooted families and communities, while more than 74,245 Palestinians have been killed, according to Gaza’s Ministry of Health.

Although a “ceasefire” was announced in October 2025, it has not brought an end to the suffering. The Ministry of Health says 1,462 Palestinians have been killed since the “ceasefire” took effect, while Israeli attacks and other military activity have continued across the Strip.

Years of war have brought the collapse of education, healthcare and the economy, while access to food, water, shelter and other basic necessities has become a daily struggle.

Surviving daily life

For people in Gaza, the war has changed not only where they live, but how they carry out the most ordinary parts of daily life.

A home, running water, electricity and a mode of transport – the basic infrastructure of everyday life – no longer exist for many Palestinians in Gaza.

In September, according to the UN, 94 percent of Gaza’s population remained in urgent need of shelter and basic household assistance, while 65 percent of households were living in tents or makeshift shelters offering little protection from the elements, having been forced from their homes by Israeli attacks or forced evacuation orders.

Many families also lacked adequate bedding, lighting, kitchen equipment and sanitation facilities, according to the United Nations.

Water has become another daily challenge. Ninety-one percent of assessed households experienced moderate-to-high water insecurity in early August, up from 84 percent in June, according to the UN.

Electricity is similarly unreliable. Gaza has remained without a functioning electricity grid, leaving essential services and households dependent on generators and increasingly scarce fuel, engine oil and spare parts.

Damaged roads and communications networks have also made transport, phone and internet access and access to basic services more difficult.

The result is a daily life reorganised around survival: collecting water, charging a phone, cooking, washing and moving between services all require resources and planning that were once unnecessary.

Economic grief

Gaza’s economy has been devastated by the war, with the destruction of businesses and local industries leaving families with little income and sharply reduced purchasing power.

In September, the UN Conference on Trade and Development estimated that 92 percent of Gaza’s economic establishments had been damaged or destroyed since October 2023, while unemployment had reached 78 percent.

GDP per capita stood at just $212 in 2025, around 17 percent of its 2022 level. Agriculture and industry were each operating at just 6 percent of their 2022 output, while construction had fallen to 1 percent.

The economic collapse has also made basic goods increasingly unaffordable. Restrictions on the movement of goods have deepened the damage to Gaza’s economy, where most goods traded with the outside world have historically passed through Israeli-controlled crossings.

The impact has been felt directly by consumers. In September, prices remained around 200 percent above pre-October 2023 levels, according to the UN.

As jobs and incomes have disappeared, economic activity has increasingly centred on aid, debt and small-scale informal work. Economic researcher Rami al-Zaygh told Al Jazeera that the war had “pushed society back decades”, reviving old professions and creating new types of work using basic tools and whatever resources are available.

Many families in Gaza now rely on cash assistance from humanitarian groups. Physical cash itself has become increasingly scarce, with people using digital payments and e-wallets instead.

Struggle to study

The war has drastically changed education in Gaza. For nearly three years, hundreds of thousands of children had no regular access to in-person schooling as schools were damaged or destroyed, while many of those still standing are used as shelters.

Nearly 98 percent of schools have been damaged or destroyed, according to UNICEF. As of April 2026, around 700,000 children aged 4 to 17 had missed almost three consecutive years of in-person education.

Instead of returning to classrooms, many children have been learning in tents and temporary learning spaces. Around 200,000 children have no access to education.

The disruption has also widened the gap in children’s learning. The Palestinian Ministry of Education has warned of a serious loss of basic skills and a growing academic gap, with nearly three years of interrupted education threatening the long-term educational prospects of an entire generation.

Healthcare decimated

Gaza’s health system has been pushed close to collapse.

All 36 of Gaza’s hospitals have been damaged, and only 19 are currently functioning, according to the World Health Organization. None is operating at full capacity.

The few facilities still operating are struggling with severe shortages of essential medicines, medical equipment, diagnostic supplies and fuel. These shortages have disrupted cancer treatment, dialysis and care for people with chronic diseases.

Access to treatment outside Gaza has also remained limited. Since October 2023, about 12,400 patients have been medically evacuated, but the WHO says tens of thousands more still require specialised care unavailable inside the Strip.

The collapse of the health system, combined with deteriorating living conditions, has also created increasingly dangerous public health conditions.

The WHO warned in September that overcrowding, inadequate shelter, water and sanitation were increasing the risk of disease outbreaks.

It said the health system was not equipped to cope with these growing risks and called for sustained humanitarian access, essential medicines and equipment, rehabilitation of health facilities and expanded medical evacuations.

A shrinking space

Gaza’s geography has been transformed by the war. Israeli military control and access restrictions have divided the territory, pushing Palestinians into an increasingly smaller area while cutting them off from homes, farmland and vital facilities.

The so-called Yellow Line is a military demarcation inside Gaza marking areas of Israeli military deployment and restricted access. Since it was established under the October 2025 “ceasefire”, Israel has moved it deeper into populated areas, forcing families to leave.

In September, Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor said Israeli military control and access restrictions covered around 70 percent of Gaza, leaving more than two million Palestinians concentrated in less than 30 percent of the Strip.

Rafah is one of the clearest examples of this transformation. Located in southern Gaza along the border with Egypt, the city became a refuge for more than one million Palestinians displaced from across the Strip during the war.

In May 2024, Israel’s military operation in Rafah displaced more than 800,000 people, according to the UN. Today, almost all of Rafah, except for the western area, Mawasi Rafah, is under Israeli control, leaving Palestinians displaced from the city unable to return to their homes.

Euro-Med warned on September 29 that the expansion of Israeli-controlled areas was entrenching forced displacement, denying Palestinians access to their homes and land and leaving them without guarantees of return.

Security and governance

Before the war, Hamas had governed Gaza since 2007, running its civilian administration and security services. The war has disrupted that system, leaving Gaza with a severely degraded civilian administration.

In July, Hamas announced that it would hand administrative powers to the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (NCAG), a Palestinian technocratic body established under the post-war plan. But the transition has yet to take place.

The war has also weakened the systems responsible for maintaining public order.

Israeli forces have repeatedly attacked police officers and security posts. The UN Human Rights Office recorded at least 12 attacks on police between January and May 2026, killing 53 people, including 35 police officers. The targeting of public governance institutions had contributed to chaos and undermined civilian protection, the UN said.

The Palestinian Centre for Human Rights has similarly warned that attacks on police and security personnel have weakened Gaza’s civilian protection system, contributing to a security vacuum, kidnappings, attacks on property and looting of humanitarian aid.

For people in Gaza, three years of war have left behind a sense of uncertainty with no clear path forward.

Huge crowds have lined the streets of Tehran for the funeral procession of Iran’s late supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed on the first day of the war with the US and Israel.

Footage from Iranian state TV showed many tens of thousands of mourners gathered to watch Khamenei’s flag-draped coffin being transported by a lorry along a 10km (6-mile) route that passed through the capital’s landmark Enghelab Square.

The procession took place after his body lay in state for two days at Tehran’s Grand Mosalla mosque.

Three of Khamenei’s sons prayed beside his coffin there on Sunday. But Mojtaba, the son who succeeded him as supreme leader, did not make an appearance.

He has not been seen in public since reporting being seriously wounded in the same Israeli air strike in Tehran on 28 February that killed his father and his wife.

Khamenei’s funeral procession wended its way slowly through central Tehran, from Imam Hossein Square in the east to Azadi Square in the west, on the last of three days of public mourning in the capital.

State media reported that millions of mourners filled the main boulevards connecting the squares and crowding around the black lorry that carried the coffin of the late supreme leader and four family members.

Many people were waving Iranian flags and red banners symbolising vengeance.

There were also placards saying « We must rise » and others calling for the death of US President Donald Trump, who along with Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered a joint attack on Iran four months ago that triggered a war in which thousands were killed.

Mourners were also seen throwing stones at a billboard displaying Trump’s face that was hung from a bridge. « The US killed our father. We won’t let you go! » it read.

Former president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was seen at the procession, local media reported. It appeared to be his first major public appearance since the start of the war, when three of his bodyguards were reportedly killed in a strike near his home.

Iran’s current president, Masoud Pezeshkian, was also filmed walking among a group of mourners on a Tehran street.

Earlier, he wrote on X that Khamenei had taught everyone in Iran that the country’s « greatest asset » was « its people and their unity ». He promised that Iranians would « continue the path of Iran’s honour, progress, and glory ».

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said Khamenei was « eliminated by Israel » because he had threatened its existence. « Any Iranian leader who will again try to pursue plans to destroy Israel will be killed as well, » he added.

The funeral ceremonies are taking place less than three weeks after Iran and the US signed a preliminary agreement to end the war and reopen the crucial Strait of Hormuz waterway, through which 20% of global oil and gas shipments pass.

The two countries also gave themselves two months to reach a final deal that covers Iran’s nuclear programme, US sanctions and a permanent truce.

Mediator Qatar said Iranian and US negotiators made « positive progress » at indirect talks in Doha last week following a four-day exchange of strikes and that their next meeting would be scheduled after the conclusion of the events for Khamenei.

On Tuesday, there will be a funeral procession and prayers in the central city of Qom, the centre of Iran’s Shia Muslim clerical establishment.

The ceremonies will then move to the Iraqi shrine cities of Karbala and Najaf on Wednesday.

They will end on Thursday, when Khamenei will be buried at the Imam Reza shrine in his home city of Mashhad, in north-eastern Iran.

Beijing has urged all sides to avoid escalating the US-Israel war on Iran stressing military action cannot resolve disputes among nations.

“The three-month-long US-Israel-Iran conflict has hit countries in the Gulf and the wider Middle East region hard,” said Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian in a statement.

“At this critical juncture of Iran-US negotiations, no one should reignite military conflict. Regional countries’ sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity should be respected and upheld.”

The three-month-long U.S.-Israel-Iran conflict has hit countries in the Gulf and the wider Middle East region hard. Facts have proven that military means provide no solution, and arbitrary use of force will only complicate the issue.

Iran ‘unwilling to let go of’ Hezbollah security role in Lebanon

Ronnie Chatah, host of the Beirut Banyan podcast, says continued Iranian influence over Lebanon through its ally Hezbollah – a relationship Iran appears unwilling to relinquish – remains a major obstacle to stability in Lebanon.

“Lebanon cannot function, Lebanon cannot be governable so long as this security arrangement exists,” Chatah told Al Jazeera. “Lebanon is a battlefield for the Iranian regime.”

He argued that Hezbollah’s popularity “has diminished significantly” during Israel’s attacks on the country.

“The Lebanese government has made gestures towards sovereignty, it has delegitimised Hezbollah’s weapons, it deems all IRGC activity in this country illegal. Yet until now, Iran is unwilling to let go of this country,” said Chatah.

“I think the Iranian regime can negotiate on everything else – it can negotiate on the Strait of Hormuz, it can negotiate on nuclear technology, but up until now it is refusing to negotiate on Hezbollah.”

The United States military’s Central Command (CENTCOM) said its forces conducted “self-defence” strikes on Iran’s Qeshm Island and “defeated multiple” Iranian missiles and drones, as civilian vessels and regional allies Kuwait and Bahrain came under attack.

Kuwait’s military said air defence systems intercepted incoming drones and missiles, while Bahrain’s Interior Ministry said warning sirens were activated.

Iran’s Tasnim new agency cited the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) confirming it launched retaliatory missile and drone attacks on US bases in the region, but did not name Kuwait or Bahrain, following the Qeshm strikes.

US President Donald Trump has hit back at reports that negotiations with Iran to end the war have stalled, saying that “conversations between us have been going on continuously”.

Israel continues its deadly bombing campaign in southern Lebanon a day after Trump said that Israel’s leader, Benjamin Netanyahu, had agreed to call off planned attacks on Beirut’s southern suburbs.

At least 3,468 people have been killed in Israeli attacks on Lebanon since March 2, with 10,577 injured, Lebanon’s Health Ministry reports.

US military says Iran attacks on Kuwait ‘failed to impact targets’

US Central Command (CENTCOM) has posted more information about the overnight tit-for-tat strikes with Iranian forces.

The command earlier said it launched “self defence” fire “in response to attempted attacks by Iran across the Middle East”.

“Iran launched several ballistic missiles toward regional neighbors; however, all failed to hit their intended targets. Two Iranian missiles fired at Kuwait fell short or broke apart enroute, and three missiles launched at Bahrain were immediately intercepted by US and Bahrain air defense forces,” CENTCOM said in a statement.

An additional wave of Iranian drones attempting to attack U.S. forces in Kuwait failed to impact intended targets tonight. U.S. Central Command air defenses successfully downed multiple drones and ensured no American personnel or assets were harmed.
