A spate of cyber-attacks that hit supermarket chains across at least 10 European countries on Monday has prompted European Union officials to warn of a deliberate attempt to disrupt the food supply chain.

Supermarkets have reported problems in Belgium, Estonia, Finland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Germany and Sweden, and the significant increase in freezer temperatures has forced retailers to discard food.

Temperatures in chains across Europe reportedly rose as high as 50C (122F).

No-one has yet admitted carrying out the cyber-attacks.

The European Union has raised concerns about the attacks, which come three weeks after a cyber-attack disrupted as many as 700 French grocery stores, causing food losses estimated at tens of millions of euros.

The security of refrigeration systems as well as other devices that can be monitored remotely has heightened concerns about government-backed hybrid attacks.

The EU’s food and agriculture commissioner, Christophe Hansen, said the bloc was taking the incidents very seriously and warned of further disruption in the future.

Commission spokesman Thomas Regnier was careful not to attribute blame, but said: « These incidents of course show once again how cyber-attacks can disrupt essential services and affect citizens’ daily lives. »

« These are not isolated incidents and of course we have to be collectively resilient and prepared for such cyber incidents. »

In Italy, Giorgia Meloni’s government called a meeting with intelligence chiefs, but said the impact was « currently very limited » and most of the food distribution chain had up-to-date security systems able to fend off such attacks.

At least four Co-op supermarkets in Sicily and one business in Tuscany were affected, according to the national cybersecurity agency.

Meloni’s office said those businesses affected were « mostly still equipped with obsolete security systems, with interfaces directly exposed to the internet and inadequate authentication mechanisms ».

Belgian supermarkets were among those hardest-hit, with dozens of stores reporting refrigeration failures. Federal prosecutors have opened an investigation.

Mathieu Tilman, a manager at a Delhaize supermarket in Belgium, said he was shocked by this kind of attack: « I don’t even understand how anyone could do this… How can we end up throwing away so much food? I find it truly distressing. In moments like these, you just feel like quitting your job. »

In Ireland, 13 SuperValu stores were impacted by what the chain’s owner, Musgrave Group, called a cyber-incident. « Replenishment of chilled and frozen ranges in the affected stores is well under way, » a spokesman said on Monday.

A small number of corner shops in the Netherlands also suffered disruption. Last month, supermarket chain Albert Heijn had to take several services offline because of a separate cyber-attack.

There was disruption to refrigeration systems at the Rewe Büsken supermarketin western Germany after a cyber-attack on system provider Danfoss, the company told the BBC. Its systems have been back in operation since Monday afternoon.

In Portugal, the Mosqueteiros group said that incidents at seven Intermarché stores had been linked to a cyberattack, which « appears to have targeted an external service provider responsible for managing the refrigeration systems ».

Swedish chain ICA also said « a limited number » of its stores had experienced refrigeration problems, without confirming a cyber-attack, and Sweden’s national cyber-security agencies said they were monitoring the incident.

In Finland, irregular temperatures were detected in a few smaller grocery stores belonging to the Kesko group, which said it was investigating the issue.

In Estonia, at least one supermarket was attacked by hackers who raised the temperature in the refrigeration units to 50C, public broadcaster ERR reported.

In the UK, the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has warned British retailers to update the software on fridge temperature controls.

The agency said the country was likely to suffer an AI-powered cyber-attack on critical national infrastructure within two years.

Richard Horne, the head of the National Cyber Security Centre, told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme there were a couple of instances in the UK where « vulnerable technology has been exploited » after the cyber-attacks.

« We don’t know the full impact, but we do know there are a couple of instances where vulnerable technology has been exploited and we’re working with those organisations. »

Asked if there was any evidence that supermarkets in Britain or freezers of the same make or model had been targeted, Horne said: « It’s not just supermarkets, it’s through the whole food supply chain, and we’ve been working through the night alerting organisations where we can see they’ve got exposed technology that’s vulnerable in this way. »

« On était ce matin sur quelques lycées perturbés, c’est a priori assez résiduel, quelques-uns en Ile-de-France, quelques-uns dans le Nord, un ou deux à Toulouse », a assuré sur France Inter le ministre de l’Education Edouard Geffray.

Annonces du gouvernement « pas suffisantes »

Dans le centre de Marseille, l’entrée du lycée Montgrand était bloquée lundi matin par plusieurs bennes à ordures empilées devant les grilles.

« On a repris le mouvement parce qu’on nous a soi-disant apporté des réponses, mais qui ne conviennent pas du tout, ce n’est clairement pas suffisant ce n’est pas ce qu’on demande », a indiqué Meriem, 16 ans, juchée sur les bennes.

Sur les quelque 75 établissements scolaires que compte Marseille, lundi matin environ sept sont bloqués d’après des lycéens militants.

A Toulouse, devant le lycée Berthelot, les élèves ont remonté « les installations de blocage », pour empêcher d’accéder à l’établissement, a constaté un journaliste de l’AFP.

« Ce n’est pas deux annonces du gouvernement qui seront périmées dans quelques mois qui vont arrêter le mouvement », a déclaré Anton, 17 ans.

« Pas d’essoufflement »

Le gouvernement a fait plusieurs annonces lundi, parmi lesquelles le remplacement progressif de Parcoursup d’ici 2028, l’annulation des suppressions de postes prévues dans l’Éducation nationale, la création de 500 postes supplémentaires, un plafonnement à 28 élèves par classe de seconde et 15’000 places supplémentaires dans l’enseignement supérieur.

« Même si ce n’est pas satisfaisant, c’est quand même des vraies choses, ce sont des premières réussites, ça montre que la mobilisation fonctionne », assure le responsable lycéen, qui s' »attend à beaucoup de blocus ». « La colère continue. On ne sent pas du tout un essoufflement », renchérit Coppélia Moreau membre d’Interfac Île-de-France, qui regroupe des étudiants d’assemblées générales d’universités.

Le collectif a prévu une nouvelle manifestation parisienne mardi, entre le Panthéon et le siège de l’organisation patronale Medef.

Dès lundi, la police va renforcer ses effectifs pour sécuriser les établissements scolaires et l’accompagnement de la communauté éducative après les violences observées lors des précédentes mobilisations, selon un message de la Direction nationale de la sécurité publique consulté par l’AFP.

The Democratic Party has high expectations as it heads into these pivotal US midterm elections.

A historically unpopular Republican president, an American public unhappy with the rising costs of food and bills, and months of favourable polls point to a good night for them on Tuesday.

Democratic candidates lead in well over the 218 seats needed to flip control of the lower chamber of Congress, the House of Representatives, the polls suggest. And they are tied or narrowly ahead in the key Senate races.

A recent New York Times poll had the Senate race in South Carolina, a state Donald Trump won by 18 percentage points in 2024, as a tie. Recent CNN surveys put the Democrats ahead in Texas, Kansas and Maine.

But are the polls accurate?

Recent US political history is littered with examples where public opinion polls, even ones just days before an election, were off the mark. Trump outperformed predictions on his way to White House victories in 2016 and 2024. His narrow defeat in 2020 came after most surveys indicated a more comfortable win for Democrat Joe Biden.

Earlier this year, polls suggested Democrat Abdul El-Sayed was poised for a double-digit win in Michigan’s Democratic Senate primary. Instead it was 1%. In Wisconsin’s Democratic primary for governor, the candidate that had a polling lead that approached 20 points lost by a fraction of a percent.

According to Clifford Young, president of Ipsos Public Affairs, which conducts political and market research surveys, polling has become difficult in recent years because it’s harder to reach Americans as they abandon their land lines and screen their calls. And many of those who pollsters do contact have become less willing to participate.

« Conservatives, especially those on the far right, are much more anti-establishment by nature, » Young says. « And they don’t participate in anything. They hate the system. That’s the challenge. »

If Republican voters are being undercounted in a systematic way, and polling companies don’t take that into consideration when constructing their voting models, it could skew their data towards the Democrats.

That’s one of the reasons why it has become trickier for pollsters to predict what the electorate will look like.

One explanation for why Trump overperformed in previous presidential elections is that his supporters – many of whom were not regular voters – flocked to the polls in higher-than-expected numbers.

That unpredictability is one of the main contributing factors to those notable recent polling misses, even if the margins in most reputable polls were only off by a few percentage points.

In a close race, those few points can make the difference between victory and defeat for a candidate. And this year, many of the key Senate races are within those narrow margins.

In recent years, midterm general election polls have proven to be more accurate, in part because Trump – and his unique ability to draw disaffected Americans to the polls – was not on the ballot.

In 2022, they suggested Democrats would defy conventional expectations and avoid an electoral wipe-out despite Biden’s low approval numbers.

While the party lost control of the House of Representatives, the margins were slim and Democrats maintained control of the US Senate.

While this year’s primary results did provide bigger surprises, Young says that nominating contests have historically been volatile, with voters more likely to make up their minds at the last minute. It shouldn’t be seen as an indication that the current crop of general election polls are off the mark.

Eric Judor revient au cinéma ce mercredi 21 octobre avec une comédie déjantée où un commercial parisien se retrouve embarqué malgré lui dans un jeu de rôles grandeur nature (GN).

Est-ce que vous connaissiez le monde du GN avant ce film ?

Eric Judor: Non, pas sous cette forme-là. Mais quand j’étais lycéen, j’ai participé à des jeux de rôles avec des cartes, chez mes parents. Je me suis beaucoup amusé, mais sûrement un peu trop aux yeux du game master: je me suis fait virer, parce que j’avais tendance à en rajouter, à faire des plaisanteries et à me distancer du jeu.

Avant le tournage, vous êtes allé assister à un GN: comment ça s’est passé?

Oui, nous nous y sommes rendus avec Hafid et des membres de mon équipe. Nous avons été accompagnés par un game master et une équipe de joueurs. Comme dans le film, j’ai dû me costumer pour pouvoir y assister. Et j’ai découvert des gens très sérieux, très organisés, des passionnés qui s’étaient préparés pendant des mois: c’est très technique.

Dans le film, on rit beaucoup du décalage entre votre personnage et les participants du jeu, mais vous ne vous moquez jamais…

C’était très important pour moi de respecter ces gens qui sont, comme les Zadistes de mon précédent film «Problemos», un peu à la marge. D’ailleurs, dans les avant-premières, je demande toujours s’il y a des «GNistes» dans la salle. En général, ils sont très contents du film. Bien sûr, on prend quelques libertés, car c’est une comédie et pas un vrai GN, mais dans l’ensemble, ils s’y retrouvent.

Il y a une scène où vous combattez un dragon: ça nous a rappelé les séries japonaises des années 1980, comme «Bioman», où les héros se battaient contre des monstres en carton-pâte… c’est une référence volontaire ?

Ha ha ha, oui c’est tout à fait ça! Malgré tout, le costume est super, mais il n’est pas à l’échelle. C’est là que naît la comédie, c’est vraiment une question d’échelle. Lorsqu’on m’a envoyé le scénario, j’ai vite compris que ce sujet-là se prêtait totalement à la comédie. C’était très cinématographique.

En plus de votre perruque d’elfe, vous portez deux casquettes: acteur et réalisateur: vous êtes hyperactif ?

Non, c’est davantage une question de contrôle. D’expérience, il m’est arrivé d’écrire un scénario et le résultat ne ressemblait pas à ce que je voulais. En étant réalisateur et acteur, je peux promouvoir quelque chose qui me correspond.

Donc vous préférez conduire plutôt qu’être conduit ?

Tout dépend par qui! Par exemple, Quentin Dupieux m’a dirigé dans son prochain film, qui sortira bientôt: je lui fais une totale confiance et dans ce cas, ça me va très bien d’être conduit.

J’ai vu que pour les avant-premières, les spectateurs étaient invités à venir costumés au cinéma…

Oui, des fois ça marche et d’autre fois pas du tout. C’est un pari risqué, on n’est pas aux Etats-Unis ou en Grande-Bretagne: à Nantes ou Toulon – je ne me souviens plus- il n’y a qu’une personne qui avait joué le jeu! Et en Suisse, personne!

The world’s largest crypto exchange halts withdrawals as the theft is linked to North Korean hackers.

Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, says hackers have stolen about $6.3bn in what appears to have been the biggest crypto heist on record.

The company, which was co-founded by the Chinese-born Canadian billionaire Changpeng Zhao, suspended deposits and withdrawals on Thursday and said it would cover all losses, telling Al Jazeera in a statement that user funds were “safe”.

Two United States blockchain analysis firms have claimed the attack originated in North Korea.

So how did it happen, and what does it mean for the crypto market? Here’s what you need to know:

What happened?

Blockchain analysis firms TRM Labs and Chainalysis say most of the theft unfolded over about 20 minutes, starting late on Thursday.

“An attacker moved approximately 6.36 billion USD out of Binance wallets on 10 blockchains,” TRM reported.

That dwarfs the previous record of $1.5bn, which was stolen from the exchange Bybit in February 2025.

Binance said about $3bn of that has since been frozen, including more than $2.3bn by stablecoin issuers Tether and Circle, according to the Reuters news agency.

Binance has not stated what has happened to the remaining $3.3bn.

It also warned on X that the $6.3bn figure “may continue to increase” as the company works to trace and freeze more assets.

Who carried out the heist and how?

North Korean hackers, according to the firms tracking the funds.

TRM said it had assessed with “high confidence” that the attack was carried out by TraderTraitor, a North Korean hacking unit linked to the Lazarus Group.

According to the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), the Lazarus Group “targets and compromises entities primarily in South Korea and South Korean interests for espionage, disruption, and destruction”.

It also conducts cyberoperations for financial gain, including targeting cryptocurrency exchanges, the CFR says.

The US Department of the Treasury sanctioned the Lazarus Group in 2019, saying it was controlled by North Korea’s primary intelligence bureau. North Korea routinely denies involvement in hacking.

Chainalysis reached the same conclusion, however.

The FBI also blamed the Bybit hack in 2025 on the same unit.

TRM said the attackers ordered Binance’s wallets to empty into wallets they controlled, mirroring the Bybit hack.

Binance has been more cautious, however. “Our investigation has not attributed responsibility to any individual,” co-CEO Richard Teng said on X.

The company initially said the breach may have started with a hacked laptop belonging to one of its engineers. But on Friday, it said further investigation had uncovered “additional points of breach”.

Binance said it had found no evidence that any wallet’s private key, the digital password that controls a crypto wallet, had been leaked.

But Mark Karpeles, former head of the collapsed Tokyo exchange Mt Gox, told Reuters the attackers had probably accessed keys for at least two Binance wallets.

What was the purpose of the attack?

While North Korea denies involvement in crypto theft, it has become a much-needed source of foreign currency for Pyongyang, helping to prop up its economy and fund its nuclear programme, which is under United Nations sanctions, experts say.

In December 2022, South Korea’s spy agency estimated that North Korean hackers had stolen about 1.5 trillion won ($1.1bn) in crypto and other virtual assets over five years.

“When North Korea steals at this scale, the money funds weapons proliferation and other destabilising activity,” Ari Redbord, TRM’s global head of policy, told Al Jazeera, adding, “That makes this a global security issue, not just a crypto theft.”

What does this mean for the crypto market?

Prices have fallen, though markets steadied after the initial shock.

Bitcoin hit a six-week low of $76,368, while Ether fell more than 3 percent to a two-month low of $2,178.

Shares in crypto exchange Coinbase, which said it was unaffected, fell 4.8 percent.

The hack comes as crypto had already been under pressure from higher US interest rates and weaker demand from exchange-traded fund buyers, analysts told Reuters.

The stolen sum is more than six times Binance’s $1bn emergency fund, the Secure Asset Fund for Users, set up in 2018 and held entirely in Bitcoin to protect users in case of a breach.

Teng said company funds would also cover losses.

Is crypto an inherently unsafe investment?

The hack has exposed one particular weak point: Large, centralised exchanges, which hold users’ assets on their behalf.

“Any assets held at a centralised exchange are only as safe as the exchange itself, and the larger the exchange’s holdings, the larger a target it becomes,” Sean Foley, an expert in crypto markets at Macquarie University in Sydney, told Al Jazeera.

Insurance offers limited protection as most crime- and cyber-insurance policies do not cover stolen cryptocurrency, and crypto-specific cover remains a niche business offered largely by specialist insurers.

Thefts are frequent. Hackers stole $2.87bn in crypto in nearly 150 attacks in 2025, according to TRM’s 2026 Crypto Crime Report.

Binance itself has faced legal trouble. Founder Changpeng Zhao pleaded guilty in 2023 to a felony linked to failing to prevent money laundering on the platform. US President Donald Trump pardoned him in 2025.

On Friday, Binance said it was coordinating with law enforcement and remained on track to resume withdrawals within 45 hours.

L’Espagne a entamé jeudi trois jours de deuil national après la collision mercredi entre deux trains qui a fait au moins 68 morts et plus d’une centaine de blessés, pire tragédie ferroviaire dans ce pays depuis 2013, moins d’un an après une collision qui avait fait 46 morts.

« Toute l’Espagne est en deuil », a de son côté déclaré solennellement le Premier ministre Pedro Sánchez depuis le centre de coordination des secours, jugeant « inacceptable » que le pays ait subi deux accidents ferroviaires majeurs « la même année ». Le dirigeant socialiste a décrété trois jours de deuil national, de jeudi à samedi.

Le président de la région, Emiliano García-Page, a fait état de 68 morts, un bilan qui n’a cessé de s’alourdir au cours de la journée. Les autorités ont recensé par ailleurs de 108 blessés, dont 58 hospitalisés.

Cette catastrophe a suscité des interrogations sur la sécurité du réseau ferroviaire espagnol après que le ministre des Transports a évoqué « une erreur » et des « circonstances inexplicables » qui ont abouti à la collision.

La collision s’est produite dans la région de Castille-La-Manche mercredi matin lorsqu’un train à grande vitesse de la compagnie nationale Renfe est entré en collision avec un train à l’arrêt appartenant à la compagnie espagnole privée Iryo.

Panne et décision « erronée et inexplicable »

Le ministre des Transports Óscar Puente a indiqué que le système de signalisation était tombé en panne, provoquant tout d’abord « l’arrêt automatique » de six trains se trouvant dans la zone, dont les deux trains accidentés.

Mais quelques minutes plus tard, le centre de contrôle a ordonné la reprise en marche du train Renfe, une décision « erronée » et « inexplicable », selon les termes d’Óscar Puente.

En un quart d’heure, ce train de la Renfe a parcouru 25 kilomètres, selon le ministre, avant de heurter, à une vitesse encore inconnue et en pleine ligne droite, le train Iryo, resté lui à l’arrêt.

Le centre de contrôle avait « largement le temps pour vérifier l’erreur, mais ils ne l’ont pas rectifiée », a souligné Óscar Puente.

Face aux nombreuses questions des journalistes, Óscar Puente, qui a rejeté l’idée d’une démission, a qualifié l’accident d' »invraisemblable » et assuré que le système ferroviaire espagnol était « sûr ».

La sécurité du réseau en question

Avec près de 4000 kilomètres de voies ferrées, le réseau ferroviaire à grande vitesse espagnol est le deuxième du monde, après celui de la Chine.

La collision d’Adamuz le 18 janvier avait ravivé les débats en Espagne sur l’entretien du réseau ferroviaire et sur la sécurité pour les passagers, dans le deuxième pays le plus visité au monde chaque année.

Cet accident avait également suscité de vives critiques de l’opposition contre le gouvernement de Pedro Sanchez, qui s’était alors engagé à investir 1,8 milliard d’euros pour améliorer la maintenance du réseau.

Avec un bilan qui reste provisoire, la tragédie d’Urda est la plus grande catastrophe ferroviaire en Espagne depuis un déraillement meurtrier ayant fait 80 morts près de Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle en 2013.

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says right-wing parties have won a “decisive majority” among the Zionist public and called for the formation of a “national right-wing government”.

Exit polls, however, show no outright winner and suggest Netanyahu’s coalition is only slightly ahead of the main opposition alliance, though neither side can secure a majority.

Arab parties are projected to win 18-19 seats, collectively, improving on their performance four years ago, though neither main bloc says they’ll invite them to form a government.

Voter turnout stood at 77.7 percent, the highest in nearly 30 years, according to the Central Elections Committee.

Israel’s Palestinian citizens voted for ‘freedom, justice, and equality’

Speaking to Al Jazeera, Abu Shehadeh said Palestinian citizens of Israel voted in such large numbers in yesterday’s election because they want “to promote a different political alternative, which is based on the values of freedom, justice, and equality for both people who are living between the river and the sea”.

Turnout among Palestinian citizens of Israel, who account for one-fifth of the total population, reached about 80 percent, according to estimates.

“We are very proud of the Arab-Palestinian minority in Israel that went in this very high percentage of voting in this election,” said Abu Shahedeh, adding that the Arab-led political groups have fulfilled “the first thing that we promised them [voters] – that we are going to prevent this gang of criminals from coming back and being able to form the next government, Netanyahu, Smotrich and Ben-Gvir”.

Daniel Levy, the president of the US Middle East Project, says Israel finds itself in a post-election political conundrum because both leading blocs are refusing to work with the Arab-led lists.

“It seems that for the Zionist opposition who kept telling Israelis … that Netanyahu had to go or Israel was in existential danger, [that] he was a threat to the fabric of Israel … most of them seem to be choosing the course that rejects alliance with the Palestinian Arab parties – and that therefore de facto keeps Netanyahu in power,” Levy told Al Jazeera.

That is why, according to Levy, the Zionist opposition to Netanyahu “will stick to their ethno-nationalist Zionist ideology and reject those Palestinians”.

Impossible to defeat Netanayhu-led bloc ‘without Arab citizens’

Ayman Odeh, who leads the Joint List party Hadash-Ta’al alongside Ahmad Tibi, says the Netanyahu-led bloc would have secured an outright majority in the election if it were not for Israel’s Palestinian citizens.

“Without the Arab citizens, Netanyahu, Ben-Gvir, and Smotrich would already be celebrating today,” Odeh said in an X post.

“But the truth is simple”, he added, “even the Arab citizens alone cannot bring about the change, and even without us, it’s impossible to defeat them.”

Odeh said: “Without a genuine and equal Jewish-Arab partnership, it’s impossible to build a better future here for all of us. And we all deserve such a future.”

SpaceX a publié mardi un bénéfice largement supérieur aux attentes au troisième trimestre, avec un chiffre d’affaires qui a plus que doublé, grâce à ses activités dans le cloud et l’intelligence artificielle.

« Nous nous trouvons à un moment d’inflexion pour SpaceX », a déclaré Elon Musk lors d’une conférence téléphonique avec les investisseurs, citant la synergie entre « les lancements dans l’espace, la connectivité et la super intelligence ».

Cette connectivité entre les opérations de Starlink et de SpaceX est le principal moteur financier du groupe, qui s’appuie également sur son propre système d’intelligence artificielle, avec xAI, éditeur de Grok, même si ce système reste jusqu’à présent dans l’ombre de rivaux comme OpenAI, Anthropic et Google.

Au troisième trimestre, le chiffre d’affaires de SpaceX a bondi de 161% à 14,58 milliards de dollars, contre un consensus de 12,72 milliards de dollars d’après des données LSEG.

Le groupe a publié un bénéfice trimestriel net de 4,4 milliards de dollars, après une perte de 1,1 milliard de dollars un an plus tôt, soit 45 cents par action. Les analystes anticipaient en moyenne un bénéfice de 1,57 milliard de dollars et de 13 cents par action.

Le chiffre d’affaires de la division IA multiplié par neuf

Sur cette période de juillet à septembre, le chiffre d’affaires de la division IA a été multiplié par plus de neuf, s’établissant à 7,6 milliards de dollars. Cela provient principalement de contrats de location de capacités informatiques, avec au premier rang des centres de données.

Toutefois, l’IA correspond également à la grande majorité des dépenses en capital du groupe (16,4 milliards de dollars, pour un montant total de 19,6 milliards de dollars).

SpaceX dit prévoir que ces dépenses resteront à des niveaux similaires dans un avenir proche.

Vers une fusion entre SpaceX et Tesla?

En marge de la présentation de ces résultats, Elon Musk a également ouvert la porte à un rapprochement entre SpaceX et Tesla. Ce serait une « bonne idée », a déclaré mardi le patron des deux sociétés, tout en prévenant que ce n’était pas « une certitude ».

« Il y aurait beaucoup d’avantages à combiner les entreprises », a fait valoir l’homme le plus riche du monde, soulignant que SpaceX et Tesla étaient déjà liées par plusieurs projets communs, de l’intelligence artificielle à la fabrication de puces.

Lula da Silva wins a fourth term as Brazil’s president after defeating Flavio Bolsonaro 51.7% to 48.2% in a closely fought runoff election.

Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has won a fourth term in office in a dramatic comeback over his right-wing challenger Flávio Bolsonaro.

Left-wing leader Lula took 51.79% of votes, becoming the first president since the return of democracy in 1988 to win an election after losing the first round of voting.

Lula told celebratory crowds this election is a « loss for negativity, lies », later adding « long live democracy ».

Bolsonaro, who is the son of convicted former president Jair Bolsonaro, has so far refused to recognise the result and called for it to be annulled, which experts say is unlikely.

In an unprecedented move, polls were also extended for two hours on Sunday evening after both candidates made requests for different reasons.

Lula’s team had argued that voters in São Paulo and Bahia could not get to the polling stations because of a lack of buses, while Senator Bolsonaro’s campaign cited heavy rain in some areas in the south of the country and in São Paulo as the reason for their request.

The decision – issued by the Supreme Court just as polling stations were due to close – meant that some had already shut and were not able to re-open.

Supreme Court President Kassio Nunes Marques – appointed by the older Bolsonaro – confirmed Lula’s victory and said that the voting extension did not cause issues for the count or the electoral process.

Lula secured 51.79% of the vote against Bolsonaro’s 48.21% – a difference of 4.4 million votes between the two candidates.

But Lula’s camp gained momentum ahead of election day, focusing on boosting voter turnout after 33 million people did not vote in round one.

Sunday saw the largest drop in abstention between the first and second rounds of a presidential election since 1989.

As disconsolate Bolsonaro supporters left the house in Brasília where their candidate had been watching the result, Lula took to the streets in São Paulo to celebrate and address his supporters.

« This, my fourth term, will be the best of any president in the history of this country », the former metal worker said. « It will be the one in which I listen most to the Brazilian people. »

Vice-President Geraldo Alckmin told him: « You, for the second time, have saved Brazilian democracy. »

Bolsonaro, who had been poised to give a victory speech, said the result should be annulled, calling it « inexplicable » and « impossible ».

But electoral law experts have told BBC Brasil that the chances of the results being annulled are remote.

Fernando Neisser from the Institute of Lawyers of São Paulo (Iasp) said it would be « difficult from a legal standpoint » given that the margin of victory was relatively large, and would depend on the « narrative » his lawyers put forward.

Expert Alberto Rollo said that dates for presidential elections in Brazil are fixed and determined by the constitution, which would add another complication to getting it annulled.

Brazil faces political challenges after the runoff

Political analyst Thomas Traumann warned that a Lula victory could face pressure from a hostile Congress and threats of impeachment, while a victory for the far right could lead to political retaliation directed at the Supreme Court.

Flavio Bolsonaro has said he would seek to free his father and pursue the impeachment of Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who led the case against the former president.

Rain across Brazil on Sunday threatened to affect turnout following record abstention in the first round earlier in the month.
